Walter Emerson Smallwood III, 65, of Springfield, Ohio passed away Sunday, September 3, 2023. He was born March 14, 1958 in Los Angeles, California, the son of Walter E. and Nancy (Howard) Smallwood Jr. Walter graduated from high school and served his country in the United States Army. He dedicated many years to the City of Springfield’s Parks and Recreation as a youth sports coach which included baseball, basketball, and umpiring.
He was preceded in death by both his parents; sisters, Kay (Taylor) Smallwood and Margaret McBroom, and brother, Larry Smallwood.
He leaves behind to cherish his memory his children, Walter Emerson Turner (Michelle Atwood), Michael Jefferson Smallwood (Latoya Hudson) and Kayetta Smallwood (Keith Haynes); sister, Rebecca McBroom (Ohio); brothers, Michael McBroom (California), Lemonte McBroom (Louisiana), Antonio D. McBroom (California) and a bonus brother, Samuel Hagans (Michelle Hagans) (Ohio); thirteen grandchildren, Walter Emerson Turner Jr., Isaiah Michael Badder, Brayden Alexander Turner (all of Michigan), Izaiah Michael Underwood, Joshua Alonze Ramey, Nevaeh Jahneí Smallwood, Michael Jefferson Smallwood Jr. (all of Springfield), Syier Michael Anthony Smallwood, Zavion Amir Hudson, Journi Serae Smallwood, Braylon Omari Smallwood, (of South Carolina) Zykeria Arrianna Michelle Smallwood (of Georgia), Mikel Lamar Emerson Smallwood (of Minnesota); six stepchildren, Carlton, Annette, Heather, Sarah and Mark, and Anastasia and a host of nieces, nephew, cousins and friends.
Visitation is Thursday, September 14, 2023 from 12 noon until the time of service at 1 p.m. in the Robert C. Henry Funeral Home.
