Carleen Castleberry Obituary

Deaconess Carleen Castleberry, 88, of Springfield, Ohio, was called to be with her Heavenly Father on November 30, 2023.  She was born December 11, 1934, in Springfield Ohio to the late Pastor Herbert Benton and Anna (McDonald) Benton in Springfield, Ohio.  She was a graduate of Springfield High. She married the late Deacon Claude N. Castleberry Sr., on October 17, 1953 in Springfield, Ohio.  They relocated to Washington D.C., then later moved back to Springfield, OH, where she was employed by Wright-Patterson AFB and transferred to Defense Electronic Supply Center (DESC), Kettering, OH, until her retirement with over 30+ years of service. Upon retirement from DESC, she acquired a job with Elderly United in Springfield for over 20 years until retirement.  Carleen loved God first, family, church family and friends.  She was raised in the church which her father started and served as Pastor of Greater First Baptist Church.  At church, she served on many auxiliaries, Willing Workers, and the Senior Choir just to name a couple and as past President. Upon death of her father, she started an Old Peoples Group on behalf of her mother, inviting the elderly sisters and new Pastor and wife to her mother’s house for dinner.  She also started a writing prison ministry, where she would write young men in prison that she knew, telling them about Jesus and His love and to uplift their spirits and show them that she cared.  When they were released, they truly thanked her and became her bonus sons.

In 2001, she moved her membership to Mt. Pilgrim Baptist Church, where she was a faithful, dedicated and giving deaconess. She served as a choir advisor to the Spiritual Chorus and President of the Missionary Society.  She served as past President of the Springfield District Missionary Auxiliary (2000-2004) and Clark County Missionary Union.

She loved her missionary ladies. She served as chairperson on several committees as well. She loved singing, not just singing in the church choir, but, the Inflammatus Choir, the GFB trio with Marselene Phelps, and Betty Piersoll and the Benton Jubilees. Her loving memory will be cherished by her 3 children, Deacon Claude N. (Ledia) Castleberry, Jr., Carla Marie (Donald) Taylor and Cencis Remell aka: Melody (Douglas) Castleberry-Perry, all of Springfield, OH; adopted son, Dr. Deacon Kevin Morris, Fairborn, OH; step-daughter, Vicki Colvin and two adopted daughters, Barbara Short and Debbie Mapp; 13 grandchildren, Christopher (Debbie) Scott, London, OH, Airgon (Angela) Kidd, William (Ashanti) Castleberry, Columbus, OH, Mignon (Beau) Griffin-Clay, Urbana, OH, Marlon Griffin, Great Falls, MT, Shayla Strodes, Cincinnati, OH, Demetrius (Jasmine) Castleberry, Livonia, GA, Meshaun Griffin, Olympia Taylor, Texas, Tara Taylor, John Yancey, Ariel Montgomery and Ashley Colvin, 29 great-grandchildren, one great-great grandson; sister-in-law, Bernice Benton, brother-in-law, Wade (Sandra) Castleberry Jr., sister-in-law, Pauline (Roosevelt) Stembridge, Marietta, GA, a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
