Bessie Jane (Martin) Murphy

Obituary 

Bessie Jane Murphy, 85 of Springfield, Ohio began her heavenly journey on Friday, April 23, 2021. She was born on July 12, 1935 in Springfield, Ohio the third of nine children to the late Joseph G. and Bessie L. (Galloway) Martin.  

Jane graduated from the Miami Valley Hospital School of Nursing in 1956 and became a registered nurse. Serving in a profession she loved, Jane was a nurse for Mercy Hospital, she became head nurse on 4 N. and later worked as a shop nurse for Steel Products. Working on a special project for the Springfield City Schools, she served as a school nurse for several school buildings. Jane enjoyed serving in this role until her retirement in the 1990s. 

In 1958 she married her high school sweetheart, Nathaniel J. Murphy. They were married for 63 years. 

She was a member of St. John Missionary Baptist Church where she sang in the Chorlettes.

Patient, kind, and caring she went out of her way to help people.  A devoted wife, mother, and grandmother she relished spending time with her family.  She enjoyed reading, finding bargains in discount stores, planting flowers - red geraniums were her favorite, and snapping your picture with a disposable camera.  

Jane is preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Bessie; husband, Nathaniel; brother, Clarence Martin; sisters, Virginia Tolliver, Mary Walker Ober, Sue Ann Rogers, and Cheryl Casey; nephews, Ronald Tolliver, and Anthony Tolliver. 

She leaves to cherish wonderful memories her daughter, Rhonda Day; grandsons, Mark (Destiny) Day, Jr. and Kyle Day; one great grandson, Enzo Day; a  brother, Donald (Donna) Martin; sisters, Sandra Evans and Constance (Ronald) Martin, and a host of nieces and nephews. Also, to cherish wonderful memories are special friend, Helen Dixon and close family friends, Linda “Peachye” Miller, Denise Johnson, Tracy Collins, and April Brown.

A graveside service will be Monday, May 3, 2021 in Ferncliff Cemetery at 11 a.m.  Arrangements by the Robert C. Henry-Clark Funeral Home.  www.robertchenryfuneralhome.com
