Wilbur Alexander Latson peacefully closed his eyes in rest on May 15, 2016 at Soin Medical Center in Beavercreek, Ohio. He was the third child born to the union of Mattie and Joseph Latson on September 25, 1931 in Columbus, Ohio.
He graduated from East High School in Columbus, and shortly thereafter joined the United States Marine Corps in 1950, where he served his country for four years before being honorably discharged in 1954.
After leaving the military, Wilbur enrolled in The Ohio State University. While in college, he traveled to Cleveland on a fishing trip where he met Hazel Malinda Marie Landers. They courted for two years, married in 1956 and moved to Columbus. They were active in the Columbus, Ohio Seventh-Day Adventist Church, holding several offices in addition to singing in the choir. Wilbur graduated from The Ohio State University in 1958 with a degree in Mathematics, after which, he embarked upon his career at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base as a computer programmer. Wilbur and Hazel were blessed with one son, Mark, in 1965.
Wilbur's career necessitated a move from Columbus to Xenia, and later to Springfield, Ohio, where he was active in the South Fountain Seventh-Day Adventist Church as a Sabbath School superintendent, choir director and Pathfinder leader. He retired from Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in 1984, after a 30 year career, including his military service.
Wilbur loved spending time with his family, and he particularly enjoyed teasing his relatives. He also enjoyed music, poetry, classical literature and travel, especially camping in the great outdoors. Wilbur and his family traveled extensively throughout the United States, Africa, Japan and Europe. In his retirement, he joined the Buckeye Explorers Camping Club, with which he traveled monthly. He was an accomplished photographer, computer software developer, graphic designer, and family genealogist. Wilbur supported Hazel's volunteer work with The Links, Incorporated, Wilberforce (OH) Chapter, as a Connecting Link. Wilbur was also a dedicated supporter of the Dayton Performing Arts Alliancea€"the ballet, opera and philharmonic orchestra programs in the Dayton areaa€"and the Stratford Shakespearean Festival in Ontario, Canada. After earning his Ohio teaching license, he tutored students in Mathematics at Yellow Springs High School.
Wilbur was preceded in death by his parents, Mattie and Joseph Latson; siblings Thomas Andrew Latson and Evelyn Marjorie Elkins; son Mark Latson; aunt Annie Seagraves (Jasper); and cousins Edith Marie Price (Timothy) and Vincent Louis Price.
He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife, Dr. Hazel Latson, with whom he would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on June 24, 2016; her nephew, Maurice Miller, and niece Carla Miller-Johnson (Kenneth) and their sons, Bryant and Ezekiel. He is also survived by his sister, Betty Loraine Latson of Columbus, Ohio, and her son, Barney Latson; niece Stephanie Elkins, and her children Vincent Elkins and Robert Tanner; nephew Mark Steven Elkins; cousin Eula Payne-Logan (Richard), and her children Donald Payne (Denise), Michael Payne, and Lisa Payne-Jones; Donald's children, Nehemiah Payne (Alyssa), Ivana Payne, and Donald Payne, Jr.; Lisa's children, Mark Jones, Jr. and Celina Jones; cousins Louis Price (Linda) and Sylvia Price, her son LaMar Price (L'Erin), and LaMar's children, LaMar Price II and Lynnix Price; and a host of extended family and friends.
