Shelly Blackman, Jr. transitioned peacefully in his sleep April 5, 2016. He was 86 years old.
Born December 31, 1929 to Shelly, Sr. and Martha (Brooks) Blackman in Springfield, OH, Shelly was an accomplished musician, competitive athlete, Korean War Veteran, who was injured in combat, a Civil Rights activist, business owner and beloved father. He is survived by his children, Milton, Terri, Shelly, and Marci; siblings, Betty and David (Ed); former wife and life long friend, Harriet; niblings, Anasa Blackman-Onyejiaka, Tony (Sukanya) Blackman, Cindy (Carlos) Blackman Santana, Tracy (William) Blackman- Schulze; great niblings, Kelechi, Anuphong, Ossie, Ella, Miles and a host of other cherished cousins, chosen family and friends.
Shelly embraced life with kindness, passion, and never ending curiosity. As he was an avid lover of nature, in lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations in his name to the Glen Helen Nature Preserve.
Services will be held Friday, April 15, 2016 in the First Baptist Church 600 Dayton Street, Yellow Springs, Ohio 45387. Viewing: 11am Service at noon officiated by Reverend Dale DeGroat. Interment will follow immediately after service at Glen Forest Cemetery.
Shelly was deeply loved and will be sorely missed.
