Obituary

Robert Hutchins of Springfield, Ohio, departed this life on June 25, 2015 at the Kobacker Hospice House in Columbus, Ohio with his family by his side. He was born on November 24, 1932 in Springfield, Ohio to the late William and Lodie (Orr) Hutchins. Robert was a life-long resident of Springfield and excelled in athletics. He truly loved his family and was most proud to have been able to see all five of his grandchildren complete their college education. He was a member of St. John Missionary Baptist Church where he had been active with Bible Study, Small Group Ministry, the Trustee Ministry and the Finance Committee Ministry. He was a 32nd degree Mason and had been a member of Frontiers International. While a member of Frontiers International, he organized the "Men Today - Men Tomorrow" mentor program. He served on many boards and committees including the Human Relations Board of the Springfield City Commission. He was a 1951 graduate of Springfield High School (SHS) and a member of the 1950 SHS State Championship Basketball team. He attended Central State University. While at SHS, he was All-State in track in his junior and senior years and was the first SHS student to earn three Decathlon plaques during his high-school years; two first place and one second place. He was a charter member of the Springfield High School Hall of Fame. He loved sports and spent many years administering a Youth Basketball Program at Wright-Patterson AFB. He was also instrumental in helping many young men hone their basketball skills while directing a Youth Basketball Program at Keifer Junior High School. Robert was a long-time member of the Springfield Racquet Club, where as a senior citizen, he was a champion racquetball competitor. He was preceded in death by both parents; four brothers, Edward, William, James and John Hutchins; six sisters, Mattie Taylor, Minnie Lytle, Fannie Oliver, Myrtle Searcy, Carrie Hankins, and Beverly McConnell. After 34 years of employment, Mr. Hutchins retired from Wright-Patterson AFB where he was employed as a Contracting Officer. His memory will be cherished by his loving and devoted wife, Reva (Baker) Hutchins; a son, Atty. A. Robert Hutchins of Columbus, OH; two daughters and a son-in-law, Vickie Bobbitt of Pickerington and Rev. Carole and Atty Percy Squire of Columbus, OH.; sisters, Lois Young and Doris Elder of Springfield, OH.; granddaughters Reva Marie Squire and Deidra Squire of Silver Spring, MD and Kelsi Bobbitt, of Pickerington, OH; grandsons, Antony Hutchins of Durham, N.C. and Emmett Bobbitt IV of Cleveland Heights, OH; and a host of special nieces and nephews, other relatives and special friends, including Preston Hampton and his Bible Study Sessions and his very special racquetball buddies, Roger Neal and Ron Ryan. Visitation for Mr. Hutchins will be held on Sunday - June 28, 2015 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm in the St. John Missionary Baptist Church. Services celebrating the life of Mr. Hutchins will be held on Monday - June 29, 2015 at 11:00 am. in the Church, Mulberry Street entrance. Entombment will be at Rose Hill Burial Park Mausoleum. Arrangements are by the Robert C. Henry Funeral Home.
