Obituary

Maxine Y. Stewart Henry, died peacefully on April 20, 2015, at the Oroville Medical Center in Oroville, California. Maxine was born in Guntersville, Alabama, the daughter of John and Willie Mae Stewart. A friend of her family, Glover Erskine, introduced Maxine to Maurice (Morris) Henry. After a brief courtship, they were married on July 9, 1949 in Guntersville. The young couple made their home in Springfield, Ohio. Within six years, four children were added to this union: Jacquelyn Elizabeth, Linda Maurice, Bruce Edwin and Maurice James. Maxine dedicated her life to the Lord at a young age and was baptized at Livingston Chapel AME Church in Guntersville. After her marriage to Morris, she joined the Seventh Day Adventist Church. She loved the Lord and faithfully shared the gospel with others. She held Bible studies in her home which resulted in several families joining the church. Maxine was a member of the South Fountain SDA Church at the time of her passing. Maxine loved her children and grandchildren dearly and did all in her power to make sure they had a strong spiritual foundation. She once remarked, "When God asks me, 'Where is that flock that I gave you?' I want to be able to point and say, here they are." Maxine worked as a secretary at North High School. She endeared herself to many students by making sure they had lunch money and looking out for their best interests. She later worked at Elderly United and thoroughly enjoyed working there connecting seniors with much-needed resources. Maxine was an ardent defender of those who had suffered injustice and frequently became the voice for those who had no advocate. She also had a remarkable sense of humor. Maxine was a member of the Retirement Set and a member of the Les' Femmes des Charities. Maxine was preceded in death by her parents, husband Morris, brothers John Stewart Jr. and Cornelius Stewart. She leaves to cherish her memory her four children to continue her legacy, Jacqueline Parris, Linda (James) Buckins, Bruce (Lorelyn) Henry, and Maurice Henry, her sister and brother-in-law Ethel Lee and Cecil Walker. Nine grandchildren: Kiisha (Demetrius) Smith, Khalid Parris, Janelle Langford, Maurice Henry, II, Ashley (Tom) Musser, Brittney (Jethro) Rothe-Kushel, Courtney (Vipor) Bhatt, Nia S. Langford, and David Henry; six great-grandchildren: Ania Smith, Leah Smith, Isabella Henry, Audrey Henry, Joia Parris, and Esme' Parris. Brother-in-law, Harold (Laura) Henry; sister-in-laws: Beulah Stewart, Myrtle Maddox, Doris Curry, Betty Henry, Connie Henry; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and many dear friends. And, her consummate companion and very special friend, Barrett Gee. Burial will be Monday May 11, 2015 in Ferncliff Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations for the Maxine Henry scholarship fund can be sent in her name to PNC Bank. The family expresses their sincere gratitude for all of the words of encouragement, acts of compassion, cards, flowers and gifts.
