Obituary

Martha J. Jones passed away October 3, 2016 at the age of 98. She was born March 1, 1918 the daughter of Roy Ellsworth and Pearl Elizabeth (Speaks) Burden. At an early age her talent for the piano was evident. Martha attended Springfield City Schools and studied piano at Wittenberg University and the Ralph Zirkle Piano Studio. After graduation from Springfield High School, she attended Howard University and studied piano for two years under the renowned Hazel B. Harrison. Martha received her Bachelor of Science Degree from Wilberforce University and did post graduate work at The Ohio State University. Martha married Curtis B. Jones in 1941. They were married 26 years until his passing. Martha taught Piano and Theory at Wilberforce University and later became the Head of the Music Department under the presidency of Charles Leander Hill from 1951-1956 and resigned after the death of Mr. Hill. After the death of her husband, Martha taught at Roosevelt Jr. High School for 19 years and retired in 1987. She was the choir director and Minister of Music at the New North Street A.M.E. Church for almost 50 years. She was also director of the "Messiah" for the community choir after her mother retired after the inception of the first performance in 1932 at Second Baptist Church. Martha retired from her musical life's work in 1993. She was confirmed as a member of Christ Episcopal Church by the late David Allerdyce and Bishop Isaac Ahirtemi on April 16, 2000. Martha was a charter member of The Springfield Chapter of the Links, Inc. and was a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. Martha traveled extensively abroad and enjoyed many cruises with Betty Henry and her family. "Robert C. Henry II was our most patient and competent guide." Martha leaves to cherish her memory dear friends, Betty Henry, Robert C. Henry II, Alan Henry and Lisa Henry; sister-in-law, Birdie Mae Cooley; cousin, Doris Redman; niece, Gwendolyn Jones; friends, Juanta Artis, Bobbie and Barbara Williamson; caretaker and special friend, Dema Rodgers; devoted neighbor and friend, Wynona Kidd and a host of other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband. Martha had out lived all of her immediate family members. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Christ Episcopal Church or a favorite charity.
