Lollace Tillman along with his twin brother, Wallace was born March 10, 1925 in Huntsville, Alabama to Reverend Henry Tillman and Eliza Vance Tillman. He departed from us on 4/22/18 in the Fair Street home where he married his wife on 10/25/47.
Lollace left his birthplace at an age of 22 following his older brothers to Springfield, Ohio during the second known Great Migration Period (1940-1970), which began after the Great Depression that brought at least 5 million more people from North to South including many townspeople with trade skills to small and large cities like Springfield. Very soon after, he met and married Susan Marie Warmack Tillman and became a readymade father of three beautiful young girls during their first three years of marriage and later added another daughter and two sons.
He was employed at several different work places, such as White Motors, Cherubini Restaurant, Leffels Manufacturing Co., the famous Blues Café on the corner of Dilbert and Yellow Springs as a bartender, the Springfield City Sanitation Dept , and the Springfield city bus lines until he found the employment he loved most , being The Springfield City School's Bus driver until his retirement.
Lollace was a member of St. John Missionary Baptist Church. He never was the type to belong to any specific organizations. But he was always the type to be very supportive and encouraging to others especially as well to the younger generation in his unique Kind of way... such as that laugh , smile, frown, and that upsetting look that can kill but beneath it all he was that gentle hearted giving man, husband and father known as " Tilly" throughout the community. Oh, how he loved, joy, and supported his two sons, Jerald and Jeffrey in their academics and sport endeavors which not only limited to his sons but were also poured over into the lives of Springfield City student athletes .
It wasn't easy for him to talk about his childhood but bits of pieces of it would surface when family and close friends are surrounding him. Again his unique ability on how he can get your attention about matters that are of discomfort he seems to mange to turn it into a joyous light. He would tell stories about picking cotton, the segregation atmosphere in his hometown where he once had a fright at a young age; how he would tease his grandmother, Parralee to the point she called him the N- word and chased him around the house with her hair brush, where the army rejected him because he was "too skinny," the death of his ten year old sister, Rockzie who died in a fire for playing with matches, the close bonding of his fifteen siblings, the closeness to his mother, Eliza and last how he first saw his wife of 71 years walking with her three daughters, Janet, Joyce, and Judy to St John Missionary Baptist Church and stated ' that is the woman for me 'and never gave up pursuing her.
At the age of 93 he is the last of his fifteen siblings, preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Eliza Tillman; son Jeffrey L. Tillman; step daughter Janet M. Craig; brothers Levi Tillman, Larry Tillman, Curtis Tillman, Wallace Tillman, Conley Tillman, Jerry Moore, Burney Moore, James Moore, and Porter Moore, sisters Nancy Tillman Davis, Elizabeth Tillman Brandon, Rockzie Tillman, Alice Hereford, Alberta Baynes, and Paralie McWilliams. He is survived by his loving devoted and caring wife, Susan of 71 years, step daughters Joyce Powers Wilson of Springfield, OH and Judith A. Martin of Los Angeles CA: daughter, Jerran S. Tillman previous of Los Angeles now of Springfield, son Jerald L. Tillman of Columbus Ohio and honorable mention Billy Mitchell of Springfield, OH and Steve Dorsey of Omaha, Nebraska.
He is also leaving in memory counting by September 2018 eighty- seven grand to great- great- great grandchildren and a host of nephews, nieces, and cousins.
Now that his story has been shared, the family wants you to share your stories while Lollace Tillman's story continues in the hands of our Lord.
