Donnie L. Rushing, 71, took flight to be with his Heavenly Father on Wednesday, May 13, 2020 in Springfield Regional Medical Center.  Donnie was born March 6, 1949 in Monroe, Louisiana to the late Dorothy Rushing.

Donnie moved to Springfield 27 years ago from Los Angeles, CA to be with the love of his life, Medrith "Cakie" Avery.  Their love and commitment to each other has stood the test of time. Donnie loved to cook and spend time with his family.  He also loved to dress and was always looking dapper on any given day.

Donnie retired from Lutheran Social Services where he is fondly remembered.  Donnie was a member of Trinity A.M.E. Church and also participated in the Trinity "Sons of Allen".

Donnie leaves to cherish his life and memory, his loving and devoted soul mate, Medrith "Cakie" Avery-Rushing of 30 years, who was also his dedicated caretaker during the last several years of his illness;  sister-in-law, Marlene Avery; brother-in-law, Mario Avery; godson, Mark Thomas Jr.  and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

Donnie was preceded in death by his brother-in-law and good friend, Melvin "Red" Avery and nephew, Tony Avery.

Visitation will be Tuesday, May 19, 2020 from 5-7 p.m. in the funeral home.
