Obituary

Mother Betty L. Champion 81, of Springfield, Ohio made her transition in the presence of the Lord on September 19, 2015 at Springfield Regional Medical Center. She was born on December 3, 1933 in Springfield, Ohio to Daniel and Arzella (Thrasher) Champion. She worked as a care giver for over fifty years. Mother Champion was a faithful member of Center of Redemption in Springfield, Ohio. Her memory will be cherished by two sons, Reverend Michael (Carla) Champion of Milwaukee, Wisconsin and Steven L. Champion of Trotwood, Ohio; two daughters, Elder Sheila A. Fambro and Carlene (Iverson) May and one sister, Grace Bennett all of Springfield, twenty grand-children and a host of great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; one great nephew, Brian Jones, whom she raised as a son and a son-in-law, Minister Robert Whitaker both of Springfield; three godsons, Will Hayes, Wesley Sparks and Mandale Bates all of Springfield; two devoted friends, Sis. Geneva Harding and Sis. Leola Wood of Springfield, Ohio and a host of other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Marsha D. Whitaker; two brothers, Daniel Champion, Jr., and Reverend Leo Champion; three sisters, Ollie Dee Senior, Hazel Margaret and Essie Mae Champion; two grandsons, Fred Champion and Carl Champion; one brother-in-law, Harold Bennett and a dear friend, Sis. Maybelle Sykes.Mother Champion was a fantastic soul food cook and enjoyed preparing huge meals for her family and friends. She loved to put delicious Thanksgiving meals every Sunday such as, chicken and dressing or turkey and dressing, fried chicken, potato salad, candied yams, collard greens, cornbread, macaroni and cheese, sliced cucumbers and tomatoes, sheet cakes and sweet potato pies. After many years of her cooking the Thanksgiving meals on Sunday her children and grandchildren sometimes wanted to go out for dinner, but it wasn't allowed because that would upset Mama. Never a dull moment with Mama, her humor was effortless. Wow! What we would give to have that Sunday meal this Sunday! Mother would do anything for her children and grandchildren and she was very dear to all of us. She will be deeply missed, but never forgotten.
