Joseph West Obituary

Joseph L. West, Jr. passed early Saturday morning on September 14, 2019.  He was born to Rev. Joseph L. and Virginia L. Austin West on September 22, 1951.  He was always excited to let people know he was born at the Untied States Naval Training Center, Bainbridge, Maryland while his father served during the Korean Conflict.

Joseph was a member of the Zion Baptist Church, Xenia, Ohio and was baptized by Rev. J. S. Hanley on May 13, 1962.  In his youth, he attended Sunday School, Junior Church, sang in the Youth Choir and later joined the Senior Choir of Zion.  He also sang with the Senior Choir of  the Auburn Avenue Baptist Church in Bellefontaine, Ohio while his father was pastor.

Joseph was a 1970 graduate of Xenia High School and also received a Certificate of Completion for his studies at the Jackson Technical School in Jackson, Ohio  in Horticulture.  While working at Central State University, he  attended classes and in 1976 became a member of the Sigma Tau Epsilon Nu Chapter of the Technology Department.

After retiring from Central State, he had a number of part-time positions at Meijer's of Beavercreek, driver for Greene CATS and owned his own limousine service.  He loved attending business days at the elementary school, showing his limousine and letting the children take turns sitting inside.

After a number of strokes and heart problems, Joseph decided it was time for him to relocated to a nursing facility, and has resided at the Hospitality Nursing and Rehab Center for six years.  He has made many friends of the staff and residents, attending numerous activities and especially worship services.

Joseph was preceded in death by his parents, Rev. Joseph L. West Sr. and Virginia L. Austin West, and brother-in-law, Rickie L. Canada, numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.  He leaves to cherish his memory, his sister, Gwendolyn J. Canada; brother, Daniel (Chrystal) West; nephew, Ryan L. West all of Xenia, Ohio; step nieces, Tammie Canada of Huntington, WV and Christina Glass of Munford, TN, numerous great nephews and nieces.  The family would like to thank Hospitality Nursing and Rehab Center for their support, the care they have given Joseph, and the numerous words of kindness and love during this period of our life.  We would also like to thank Hospice of Dayton for their services.

A memorial service will be held for Joseph on Saturday, September 21, 2019 at 12:00 pm at the Zion Baptist Church, 565 E. Main St. Xenia, Ohio with Pastor Gary G. Chapman officiating.  Family will bury cremains at their convenience. Thank you to the Robert C. Henry-Clark Funeral Home of Springfield, Ohio for their personal care.
